War continues in Gaza as Israel and Palestine trade missiles. Men, women and children die from airstrikes in what seem to be a never-ending war. Yasser Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin are no longer around to seek peace and pursue it. There’s no clear leader demanding peace in this new flare up, the most intense since 2014. Israel a relatively new state in the territory claim attack on it’s people lead them to defending themselves, while Palestine claim aggression from Israel lead to their own defense.
War is ugly, both nations must learn to dwell together in peace. Regardless of religion, these two states must find a way to live in peace or totally destroy themselves. A cease fire is necessary, dialogue is necessary, the UN and all world leaders must intervene and demand an end to the killing of innocent children.
Maroon war with the British lasted approximately 80 years from 1655-1738. The war in Gaza began 73 years ago. The peace treaty between the Maroons and the British is an example for the possibility of long lasting peace. Though Accompong a quiet peaceful State, at times facing threats from Jamaican politicians encouraging mining on Maroon lands, Maroons has never breached the 1738 treaty. Threats from mining and encroaching on other people’s land are always cases for war, but Maroons remain peaceful.
Maybe international partners, the UN, the US, the British should say to Jamaican authorities to cease and desist mining and encroaching on Maroon lands. There’s usually no peace without justice. Maybe justice for the Maroons could lead to lasting peace between Israel and Palestine.
Similarities exist between Palestine – Israel and Cockpit Country – Jamaica. Justice leads to peace. Let the world live together peacefully, enjoying the bounties of our planet we all call home. Seek peace, agree on justice!
