Accompong, Jamaica
(Source: Iflixmedia.com) The Accompong Electoral Committee has announced that the nomination process for the upcoming leadership election in the Sovereign State of Accompong will continue as originally scheduled, despite a recent injunction issued by the Supreme Court of Jamaica.
In an official statement released Thursday, the Committee expressed its determination to uphold what it referred to as an “independent electoral process” essential to the Maroon community. This announcement follows an interim injunction granted by the Supreme Court which temporarily restricts various election-related activities.
The Committee asserts that the Maroons, as a self-governing people, possess constitutional authority over their electoral affairs. The Full Maroon Council, identified as the legitimate governing body under the Accompong Constitution, has reaffirmed the independence and autonomy of the electoral process. Established by the Full Maroon Council under the 2022 ratified constitution, the Electoral Committee is chaired by Clavi Johnson, Chairman of the Board of Elders.
After consultations with both local and international legal counsel, the Committee confirmed that the nomination proceedings scheduled for May 15, 2026, would move forward as planned. The committee criticized prospective candidate Merdie Rowe, who initiated the legal challenge, claiming he does not meet the constitutional qualifications to contest in the election.
The Accompong Constitution stipulates that candidates must reside within Accompong or neighboring districts for a minimum of three consecutive years prior to eligibility for office. The Committee expressed concern regarding Rowe’s eligibility even in light of the court’s injunction.
Additionally, the Committee voiced strong opposition to what it termed “external jurisdictional interference” in the electoral traditions and governance structures of Accompong. They argued that such actions threaten the legacy of Maroon ancestors who fought tirelessly for sovereignty and self-determination.
Emphasizing the cultural sensitivity of the electoral process, the Committee reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the Constitution of the Sovereign State of Accompong, ensuring the integrity of its electoral institutions, and defending the rights of the Maroon people.
